Brown Recluse Spiders
The brown recluse spider is very common in Nashville,Tennessee. These spiders are also commonly referred to as “fiddleback” because of the violin-shaped marking on the top surface of the head/back. The spider earns its “recluse” name due to its living habits. For example, the spiders are often found in dark, unventilated areas, which are rarely disturbed by humans. Homes which have been vacant for a few months
–i.e. foreclosed home – create an idea breeding ground for this species of spider.
Interesting Fact:
- Most spiders have eight eyes, recluse spiders have six eyes.
- Brown recluse typically live 2 years in the wild, but have been reported to live up to 10 years in idea conditions.
- From May to July, the females produce 1 to 5 loosely spun egg sacs each containing 50 baby spiders, or 250 spiders for all 5 combined sacs.
- New spiderlings typically hatch within one month.

Ants are social insects of the family Formicidae and, along with wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. They live in colonies which may host thousands or even millions of individuals. Ants can be harmful to human health. For example, the Pharaoh Ant carries more than a dozen dangerous bacteria, including staphylococcus and salmonella. The Fire Ant found in Tennessee, have attacked humans and reported to have killed livestock. Some species of the big-head ant are intermediate hosts of various poultry tapeworms.
